Much awaited 8th Annual DC South Asian Film Festival in partnership with Montgomery College opens on Friday Sept. 20th, 2019 with Kaifinama, a film on the life of Late Poet Kaifi Azmi, and post screening discussion with Actor Shabana Azmi and Director Sumantra Ghosal.

DCSAFF is a leading cultural diversity platform in the USA  showcasing  films by South Asians from around the world. It provides an open platform to bring about important social issues for conversation without any fear of repercussion or discrimination. In the past 7 years we have screened films on Women’s issues, LGBTQ , corruption, religious extremity, atrocity of caste system, human trafficking, courage, motivation and so forth.

This year we are featuring films made by South Asians in USA, Canada, Pakistan, and India. Opening Night on Friday Sept 20, 2019 will start with Red Carpet, Dinner, movie Kaifinama and end with post screening discussion with Actor Shabana Azmi and Director Sumantra Ghosal.

During the three day film festival we have workshops on History and Genre of Films and Acting. On Saturday Sept. 21st and Sunday 22nd the Festival will screen premiere  selected unique award winning Independent films. Most films will have post screening discussions with actors and directors. All films have English subtitles.

This year’s  Special presentation film “The Illegal” is about  current state of the affairs,  starring Actor Suraj Sharma (of “Life of Pi” and CBS TV Series “God Friended Me” fame),the film is directed by Danish Renzu.  After the movie we will have a discussion with Actor Suraj Sharma and Director Danish Renzu.

Center Piece  film “Jhalki” is inspired by Nobel Prize winner Kailash Satyarthi’s work. After the movie we will have post screening discussion with Director Brahmanand Singh and other panelists on Child Labor.

Two feature films from Pakistan “Baaji” and “Laal Kabootar” and two short films Agency and Mauj Be-harkat si will be screened on Saturday Sept. 21st 2019.

Some other feature films being screened during the film festival are “Yours Truly”, “Nirmal Anand Ki Puppy”, “ Abode”, “ Bulbul Can Sing”, “Smash”, “ Ask the Sexpert”. In addition to feature films there will be 18 short films and 3 documentaries.

The film festival will close on Sept 22, 2019 with a beautiful movie “The Last Color”, starring Actor Neena Gupta, directed by Vikas Khanna. After the movie there will be a post screening discussion with Actor Neena Gupta, Director Vikas Khanna, and other panelists on women’s issues. This will be followed by Jury awards and discussion with Michelin Star Chef, Writer, TV Host and Film Maker Vikas Khanna about his culinary journey. The evening will end with special hors d’oeuvre’s by Chef Vikas Khanna, dinner and music.

Location : Robert E Parilla Performing Arts Center, Montgomery College, 51 Mannakee St, Rockville, MD 20850. Ample Free Parking. Metro buses every few minutes from Rockville and Shady Grove Metro stations. Food will be available for sale.
